IB-RD3640SU3 S.M.A.R.T. read error and Raid 5 rebuilding

Hi Icy Box team and users,

I bought 8 months ago a IB-RD3640SU3 (real good piece of hardware) with 3*2T Hitachi's HDDs creating a Raid 5 array without problem.

Yesterday I noticed that my "error" led was slightly red.
I checked the forum because the available manual is clearly not precise about the procedures in case of failures.
I saw a post saying that I have to open the IB and saw that my third HDD had a red notification led next to it.
I thought it was a HDD failure and managed to power off the IB, extract the faulty HDD and check it on my Win computer after initializing it.
The drive had a SMART error notification on the 0x01 "Read Error Rate" count (15/15 with a 16 threshold).
I downloaded the HGST drive fitness test software from Hitachi's website and done all tests, everything went fine.

Then I proceeded to put back the HDD before powering the IB on, but nothing happened (blue HDD led and red bay led, no rebuilding).
I powered off the IB, extracted the drive again, powered it on and hot plugged the drive. Still... nothing happened. Same led states as above.

So here are my questions:
1- Does the SMART "Read Error Rate" failure automatically exclude the drive from the Raid 5 array (as the HDD led is still blue but the bay led is red) ?
Can I still use this SMART error flagged HDD in the same Raid 5 array ?
2- As I initialized the disk in Windows to test it I was thinking that the Raid 5 array would be broken on that drive and it would be rebuilt as soon as I put the HDD back in the IB. Is that the case ?
3- What's the exact procedure to rebuild my 3 HDDs Raid 5 array (eSATA connected or not, is "hot swap" mandatory...)

Thanks in advance

EDIT:
I tested a bit more and I can confirm that HDD3 is not reading anything, when I read some media HDD1 & 2 leds are blinking but not HDD3.

Re: IB-RD3640SU3 S.M.A.R.T. read error and Raid 5 rebuilding

A self update about my issue for you to know:

A S.M.A.R.T. "Read Error Rate" failure on a HDD seems to exclude the drive from the Raid 5 array as I did not succeed in rebuilding the array with the drive.
I checked the drive and erased the HDD using Hitachi software.
On the IB, the red led on the bay was then off for this drive (but rebuilt did not start).
I don't know if it's mandatory but I also initialized the HDD in Windows after that.
It seems that the eSATA cable MUST be plugged in order to rebuild the array, as soon as I plugged the eSATA cable the rebuilt began.
Hot swap isn't mandatory because I plugged the HDD before the eSATA cable and rebuilt started with HDD in the bay.

Hello virusx,

that is some good information,
thank you for sharing.

If you don't mind, i'd like to make this sticky, so it is easy to find.

Best regards,
Stephan

No problem you can make my post a sticky Stephan.
My drive went back to SMART read error two weeks after my message, but I did not try to rebuild again as I'm currently moving from my home.
I'll try to have this drive replaced, still under warranty.
I'll test to fast erase the disk and launch a rebuilt as explained in my post, i'll let you know the exact procedure.
