IB-3640SU3 and linux

I'm planning to use IB-3640SU3 device with my linux PC. Which is better, use native RAID5 feature of the device or use it as a JBOD-device and create RAID array using linux tools?
It's possible that the RAID created in native mode by IB-3640SU3 will be faster, but linux-created one seems to be easier to restore in case of malfunction.

Any thoughts on those options?
Thanks!

Re: IB-3640SU3 and linux

Hello skeve,

i don't know if the Linux-softwareraid works with the JBOD mode of the Box,
since all drives are provided to the OS via one cable.
If it works though, and you don't have an extra Backup, i'd go with the software-raid.
If you use the hardware-raid, i strongly recommend an extra backup, since
in case of hardware failure your only chance to recover the data would be
an identical device (Firmware and all). There might be another way to restore
the hardware raid5, but that is above me ;)

Best regards,
Stephan

Thank you, Stephen. I guess you're right, I'll try to create the software raid first and see how it works
