USB 3.0 error message and USB Cable lenght

So I just bought a ICY BOX IB-3810U3. When connecting it to the computer's USB 3.0 port I got an error message about asm107x which I believe is some sort of USB driver software.

I tried to update the software (via this page http://www.station-drivers.com/index.ph ... 12&lang=en) but was told that the update was older than the one I had installed.

So I switched to a USB 2.0 port instead and that worked although I was told that speed would be better if I used a USB 3.0 port instead.

I have never had any error messages from the USB 3.0 ports before.

Is this a known problem?

Second question: The USB Cable the came with the ICY BOX is as bit too short for my set-up. Are you allowed to use a longer one and if so what's the limit?
